Pirates Go Pink

Pirates Go Pink

MJC Pirates softball team took the field for the first time in over a year.  The Pirates traveled to Belmont, CA to test their skills against Divion II Notre Dame de Namur.  The Pirate softball team has been revamped and added girls from all over the area plus four girls returning from the suspended team from last year including new Head Coach, Donnie Donaldson.  In 2019 the Pirates had to suspend their season due to lack of players forcing eight players to take last year off.  Now MJC has 16 girls ready to take on the Big 8 conference and have been working together for the last six weeks.  Wearing pink to support October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Pirates showed their nerves early giving up 5 runs in the first inning before settling down for the rest of the 14 inning scrimmage marathon.  Megan Lutz (Hughson HS/Cal Baptist) had the first hit for the Pirates in the second inning and Jana Fontana (Beyer HS) and Alyssa Donaldson (Waterford HS) both had doubles on the day.  Taylor Brewer (Waterford HS) and Emillee Boles (Dakota Ridge HS, CO) each had singles.  Boles also pitched five scoreless innings in the circle to lead the staff that includes Savannah Guzman (Sierra HS) and Claire Noble (Modesto HS/York College)  The Pirates also showed flashes of brilliance on defense by turning a diving double play from Marina Figueroa (Modesto HS) to Fontana to Boles.  Aubrey Garcia (Patterson HS) had a stellar game at 3B nabbing several line drives and grounders from the corner.   "I think between the nerves of playing a Division II team and overall first time on the field together we had a really good day.  There will obviously be some changes and securing a few mistakes on defense as well as a developing more confidence at the plate.  We are going to be fine and look forward to the next challenge."  said Donaldson.  The Pirates travel to Merced, CA on Wednesday, Oct 9th to take on the Lady Bluedevils of Merced College at 5pm before they host a round robin on Nov 2nd against Cabrillo College at 10am and Reedley College at 2pm at Pirates field.
