The Modesto Junior College Pirates baseball team is off to a scorching 7-1 start, fueled by a potent offense and steady pitching that has set the tone early in the season. Through eight games, the Pirates are hitting an impressive .313 as a team with a .459 on-base percentage, consistently applying pressure to opposing defenses. They have already racked up 72 runs, 60 RBIs, and 111 total bases, including 21 extra-base hits and two home runs. The lineup's depth has made it difficult for opponents to find an easy out, and the Pirates' ability to get on base and drive in runs has been a key factor in their fast start.
Individually, several players have ignited the offense. Sophomore infielder Jr. Bedford is leading the charge with a blistering .452 batting average, while catcher Caleb Hendricks is hitting .400 and providing power and production behind the plate. Ryan Silva has been a spark plug in the infield, posting a .564 on-base percentage, and freshman outfielder Troy Morrow has added pop with multiple extra-base hits and a home run.
On the mound, the Pirates have been just as effective, holding opponents to a stingy .176 batting average against, with a 1.11 WHIP and a 3.93 ERA. Leading the way is Brandon Leon. Leon has appeared in four games, earning three wins without a loss, and has quickly become the go-to arm in key moments. In 11.1 innings of work, he has allowed just three earned runs for a sharp 2.38 ERA, while holding opponents to a .237 batting average. His 1.06 WHIP highlights his ability to limit traffic on the bases, surrendering only nine hits and three walks.
