Pirates Surge to #9 in State Rankings After Statement Sweep
The Modesto Junior College baseball team is peaking at the right time.
Following a thrilling three-game sweep over American River, the Pirates vaulted seven spots to No. 9 in the latest CCCBCA Home Run 30 Rankings released April 13, solidifying their place among California's elite programs.
MJC's biggest statement came in the series finale on April 10, an instant classic 9-8 extra-inning victory that showcased both resilience and depth. After falling behind early, the Pirates exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning to take control before grinding through a back-and-forth battle that extended into the 10th.
When the moment called for a hero, Landon Laplante delivered—lining a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to secure the sweep and send the Pirates home victorious.
While the offense produced 14 hits in the win, it was the bullpen that proved decisive down the stretch—highlighted by a dominant outing from Braden Giardina (pictured above). The sophomore right-hander was lights out in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit or a walk while striking out one. Giardina faced the minimum seven batters and shut the door on American River's offense to earn the win, improving to 5-2 on the season.
MJC utilized a total of five pitchers in the contest, with Ayden Tinsley also providing key middle relief by tossing 2.2 scoreless innings to stabilize the game and give the Pirates a chance late.
At the plate, the Pirates showed balance throughout the lineup. Caleb Hendricks led the way with three hits, while Jr Bedford and Ryan Silva each contributed multi-hit performances. Laplante finished with two RBIs, including the game-winner, while seven different players recorded at least one hit.
Now sitting at 24-9 overall and 11-6 in Big 8 play, Modesto has surged to No. 5 in the Northern California regional rankings with a .621 RPI—an important factor as postseason selections approach.
The Big 8 Conference continues to assert itself as one of the strongest in the state, with six teams ranked in the top 30. Within that competitive landscape, the Pirates' rapid climb reflects a team finding its rhythm at the perfect time.
With momentum building and confidence growing, Modesto will look to carry its hot streak forward as it eyes a strong finish and a deep postseason run.
