MJC’s Troy Morrow Make History Being Named Big 8 MVP and Freshman of the Year
A historic season for Modesto Junior College Baseball added another milestone this week, as freshman standout Troy Morrow was named both the Big 8 Conference Most Valuable Player and Freshman of the Year. Morrow becomes the first player in MJC program history to earn Big 8 MVP honors, further cementing the 2026 season as one of the most memorable in school history.
Morrow, a Modesto native, was a driving force behind the Pirates' championship run, helping lead MJC to a Big 8 Conference title and a postseason berth. His impact was felt in every phase of the game, combining elite hitting, speed, and defensive presence in the outfield.
Over 39 games this season, Morrow posted a stellar .374 batting average while collecting 55 hits and scoring 39 runs. He tallied 43 RBIs and showcased extra-base power with 6 home runs, 8 doubles, and a state-leading 8 triples — ranking first in California in that category. His ability to stretch hits and create scoring opportunities made him one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the conference.
Morrow also demonstrated exceptional plate discipline, recording a .469 on-base percentage and a .660 slugging percentage. He drew 24 walks while striking out just 20 times, highlighting a mature approach at the plate well beyond his freshman status. On the bases, he added 15 stolen bases, consistently putting pressure on opposing defenses.
His conference numbers were even more impressive, batting .400 with a .508 on-base percentage and .726 slugging percentage in Big 8 play — a key factor in MJC's rise to the top of one of the most competitive conferences in the state.
