Pirates Crush Season Opener
Modesto Junior College kicked off the 2025 football season with a commanding 40-14 home victory over Laney College on Saturday night, showcasing explosive offense and a swarming defense. The Pirates wasted no time getting on the board, with sophomore running back Bryson Davis breaking free for a 47-yard touchdown just over a minute into the game. Davis would go on to add two more touchdowns in the first quarter alone — including a 60-yard sprint and another 47-yard score — finishing the night with 213 rushing yards on just nine carries. Quarterback Day Tafoya added a 15-yard touchdown strike to Glen Weber, while Aiden Muhammad powered in a short rushing TD late in the third to cap Modesto's offensive onslaught.
Defensively, the Pirates were just as dominant. The MJC defense held Laney to only 44 rushing yards on 41 attempts, racked up five sacks, and forced two interceptions — including a 29-yard return by Thomas Perea. A third-quarter safety added to the Pirates' lead and highlighted their aggressive front seven. While Laney managed two late touchdowns, the game had long been decided. With this emphatic win, Modesto Junior College sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting 2025 season.
The Pirates go on the road this Saturday, September 6th at Santa Rosa Junior College at 1:00 pm.
