Modesto Dominates Reedley to Stay Perfect in Valley Conference Play
The Modesto Junior College football team delivered a dominant performance on both sides of the ball Saturday afternoon, shutting out Reedley College 31-0 at home to improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Valley Conference play. After a quiet first quarter, quarterback Cole Gilbert sparked the Pirates' offense with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Max Friedman just seconds into the second. Kicker Emanuel Garibay added a 30-yard field goal before halftime, giving MJC a 10-0 advantage at the break.
Modesto's offense controlled the game from start to finish, amassing 527 total yards while limiting Reedley to just 147. Running back Caden Bailey led the ground attack with 136 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, while quarterback DayDay Tafoya added 105 yards rushing and 154 through the air. Gilbert contributed a 17-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring. The Pirates averaged 7.3 yards per play and recorded 30 first downs, showing remarkable offensive efficiency.
The Pirates' defense was just as impressive, forcing three interceptions and recovering three fumbles to preserve the shutout. Linebacker Reyes Diaz led the unit with five total tackles and a tackle for loss, while Lebron Stallworth, Elmo Wartson, and Logan Durkee each contributed key defensive plays. Stallworth forced a fumble and recovered another, while Wartson added two pass breakups and a tackle for loss that went for 26 yards. Durkee and defensive back Xzavier Clark both grabbed interceptions as Modesto's defense held Reedley to only nine first downs and a mere 13% third-down conversion rate. The victory highlighted the Pirates' growing balance and depth, positioning them as serious contenders for the Valley Conference title.
