MJC Men’s Swim Opens 2026 Season with Strong Runner-Up Finish at Merced Invite

The Modesto Junior College men's swim team made an impressive statement to open the 2026 season, finishing second overall at the Merced Invite on January 30.

Competing against a solid field, the Pirates totaled 361.5 points, placing just behind Clovis College, who captured first place with 382 points. College of the Sequoias finished third with 331, followed by Merced College (192), Hartnell (177), Delta College (151), and Consumnes River College (142.5).

 

MJC's performance was highlighted by several standout individual efforts. Ben Svoboda led the way with a strong all-around showing, earning a gold medal in the 100 Freestyle (49.25), a silver in the 50 Backstroke, and a bronze in the 100 Individual Medley. Spencer Cox added to the Pirates' medal count with a gold medal in the 50 Freestyle, while Keanu Laolagi contributed with two bronze medals, placing in both the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke.

 

The strong finish at Merced sets a positive tone for the Pirates as they continue early-season competition. MJC will be back in action this Friday when they travel to Hartnell College for a dual meet against the Panthers, looking to build on the momentum from their season-opening performance.
