MJC Men's Swimming Power Past Competition for Invitational Victory
The Modesto Junior College men's swim team delivered an impressive performance on Friday, March 20th, capturing the team title at the MJC Invitational held at the Dave Ashleigh Aquatic Center. Competing against a strong field, the Pirates showcased their depth and talent, finishing atop the standings with 404 points, ahead of Merced College (355), Hartnell College (311), and Delta College (257).
Leading the way for the Pirates was freshman Spencer Cox (Hilmar HS), who turned in a standout meet with four event victories. Cox claimed gold in the 100 Backstroke and 100 Butterfly, while also contributing to winning efforts in both the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay. He added a bronze medal in the 100 Freestyle to cap off an exceptional day in the pool.
Fellow freshman Ben Svoboda (Ripon HS) matched Cox with four event wins of his own. Svoboda sprinted to victories in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Individual Medley, and played a key role on both the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay teams that finished first.
Jacob Miller (Modesto HS) continued his strong season with a well-rounded performance. The freshman secured two victories in the 500 Freestyle and as part of the 400 Freestyle Relay, while also earning a silver medal in the 100 Butterfly and a bronze in the 100 Breaststroke.
The Pirates' dominance in the relays and strong individual performances proved to be the difference as they outpaced the competition to secure the team title on their home deck.
Modesto will look to carry this momentum into the weekend as the Pirates travel to Las Positas College for a two-day meet against many of Northern California's top community college programs.
