Pirates Shine in Conference Play: Men Advance to Finals, Women Battle in Close Contest
The Modesto Junior College tennis programs delivered an exciting day of competition, with the men's team dominating in the conference semifinals and the women's team fighting hard in a narrow decision.
On the men's side, the NorCal No. 5 ranked Pirates continued their outstanding season, improving to 9–2 overall with an impressive 9-0 sweep over Folsom Lake. Nathin Dean (Sonora) led the way with a strong straight-sets win over Spencer Hamilton, 6-4, 6-3. Dean also paired with Jack Conte (Sonora) to secure the No. 1 doubles victory, helping complete the shutout performance.
Riding this momentum, the Pirates now turn their focus to the conference championship, where they will face top-seeded American River this Friday.
The women's team showed determination in a tightly contested matchup against American River but came up just short in a 5-4 loss. After trailing 2-1 following doubles play, the Pirates needed four singles wins to secure the match. Arianna Medina (Atwater), Eva Whitby (Atwater), and Erika Linares (Downey) each delivered strong singles victories to keep the team in contention. Despite the effort, the comeback fell just short.
The women now sit at 7-5 overall and will look to build on their strong individual performances as the season continues.
