MJC Track & Field Gears Up for 3C2A State Championships After Dominant NorCal Performance
The Modesto Junior College Men's and Women's Track and Field teams are headed to the 3C2A State Championships, taking place May 16–17 at the College of San Mateo, following standout performances at the Northern California Championships.
The MJC women's team captured its third consecutive 3C2A NorCal Championship in dominant fashion, showcasing exceptional depth across sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws, and distance events. The MJC men's team continued their strong form with a second-place finish for the second straight year at the 3C2A NorCal Championships, powered by depth across events and a standout showing in the decathlon.
The following MJC athletes will be competing in the State Championships.
Leading the charge was sprint star Shaylan Roy-Williams, who struck gold in the 100 meters (11.47) and long jump (5.53m), while also finishing second in the 200 meters. Multi-event standout Kylie Nunes had a remarkable showing, finishing second in the 100 meters, 100m hurdles, long jump, and javelin, while winning the heptathlon with an outstanding 5,102 points.
MJC swept both relays to further solidify their track dominance. The 4x100m relay team of Nunes, Roy-Williams Jada Orona, and Kylie Davis clocked 46.48, while the 4x400m relay team of Nunes, Orona, Roy-Williams, and Torres sealed the win in 3:51.62.
In the field, Claire Pierce cleared 3.70m to win the pole vault, backed by teammate Jade Thommes (4th). Julia Pedretti made crucial contributions with second-place finishes in the shot put and discus, fourth in the heptathlon, and points in the high jump. Kylie Davis (4th) had a strong showing in the 110m hurdles.
In the distance events, Adamari Ron placed fifth in the 1500m and ninth in the 5000m. With nearly every athlete contributing, MJC's women once again proved themselves as NorCal's top team.
Blake Gross led the way by winning the decathlon with 6,497 points, placing fourth in the 400m hurdles, and helping the team win the 4x400m relay and place sixth in the 4x100m. His brother, Brock Gross, was a close second in the decathlon (6,412 points), and also placed in the 110m hurdles (4th) and 400m hurdles (6th) while contributing to both relays.
Sprinter Jeffrey Missouri delivered once again, placing second in the 100m (10.43) and 200m (21.31). Zachary Early added to the medal count with a third-place finish in the 400m. The quartet of Early, Missouri, and the Gross brothers closed the meet with a dominant 4x400m relay win, clocking 3:13.03.
In field events, Anthony Grady placed fifth in the triple jump (13.82m) and also competed in the long jump. In the throws, Sebastian Arrizano placed fifth in the shot put and sixth in the hammer, while Lester Stavrianoudakis earned third in the discus.
Though narrowly missing out on the team title, the MJC men demonstrated the balance, talent, and grit that continue to define their program.
Both teams now set their sights on the 3C2A State Championships, where they'll look to carry their momentum and bring home top honors on May 16–17 at the College of San Mateo.
