The MJC Women's Track & Field Team 3-Peat at The NorCal Championships for Third Straight Year- Men Finish Runner Up For Second Year in a Row
The Modesto Junior College women's track and field team captured their third consecutive 3C2A NorCal Championship title with an outstanding all-around performance that showcased their depth and dominance across every event group. Sprint standout Shaylan Roy-Williams led the charge with a gold medal in the 100 meters (11.47) and long jump (5.53m), while also finishing second in the 200 meters. Kylie Nunes had a sensational meet, placing second in the 100 meters, 100m hurdles, long jump, and javelin, and winning the heptathlon with a stellar 5,102 points. Modesto also swept both relays, winning the 4x100m (Nunes, Orona, Roy-Williams & Davis) in 46.48 and the 4x400m (Nunes, Orona, Roy-Williams, Torres) in 3:51.62, solidifying their dominance on the track.
In the field events, Claire Pierce secured a victory in the pole vault (3.70m), with support from teammates Jade Thommes and Bonnie Hayes, who placed fourth and ninth, respectively. Julia Pedretti was a key contributor across multiple events, finishing second in the shot put and discus, fourth in the heptathlon, and placing in the high jump. In the hurdles, Kylie Davis (4th) and Savannah Brown (6th) added critical points, while Davis also scored in both the long and triple jumps. Distance runner Adamari Ron contributed in the 1500m (5th) and 5000m (9th), while Ava Torres ran 59.10 for seventh in the 400m. With contributions from nearly every athlete, Modesto once again proved they are the team to beat in Northern California.
The Modesto Junior College men's track and field team delivered another stellar performance at the 3C2A NorCal Championships, earning a second-place team finish for the second consecutive year. Leading the way was Blake Gross, who captured the decathlon title with 6,497 points, being a part of the winning 4x400 relay team, 6th place 4x100 relay and added a fourth-place finish in the 400m hurdles. His brother, Brock Gross, was right behind in the decathlon (2nd place, 6,412 points), being a part of the winning 4x400 relay team, 6th place 4x100 relay and placed in both the 110m hurdles (4th) and 400m hurdles (6th). Sprint standout Jeffrey Missouri continued his strong season by placing second in both the 100 meters (10.43) and 200 meters (21.31), while Zachary Early added valuable points with a third-place finish in the 400 meters. Modesto's 4x400m relay team of Early, Missouri, Gross, and Gross capped the meet with a dominant victory, finishing first in 3:13.03.
In the field events, Modesto saw strong performances across the board. Anthony Grady placed fifth in the triple jump (13.82m) and competed in the long jump, while Kenyatta Island added depth in the triple jump as well. In the throws, Sebastian Arrizano placed fifth in the shot put and sixth in the hammer, with teammate Lester Stavrianoudakis taking third in the discus and scoring in both the shot and hammer events. Brandon Weinbrecht also contributed in all three throwing disciplines. In the javelin, Modesto had a trio of scorers with Kaden MacDannald (3rd), Logan Stevens (5th), and Michael Garcia (11th) adding critical points. Despite narrowly missing the top team spot, Modesto's balanced scoring and consistent podium finishes underscored the depth and competitiveness that define the program.
MJC athletes now will compete in the 3C2A State Championships on May 16th and 17th, at the College of San Mateo. Good luck Pirates!
