Pirates Make History: Modesto JC Women’s Track Team Wins First-Ever State Title
The Modesto Junior College Pirates women's track and field team made school history on May 17, 2025, claiming their first-ever 3C2A State Championship with a dominant performance in San Mateo. Led by Head Coach Brian Beeman and Coach Demitrius Snaer, the Pirates tallied an impressive 91.50 points—16 ahead of runner-up Riverside City College, who finished with 75. The breakthrough victory marked a new era for the program, showcasing a deep, balanced roster and standout individual performances.
Freshman sprint phenom Shaylan Roy-Williams was unstoppable, earning All-American honors in four events. She captured state titles in the 100 meters (11.47), 200 meters (24.01), and long jump (19' 7"), and anchored the 4x100 relay team with a time of 48.19 and was named the State Track Athlete of the Meet. She was joined by fellow All-Americans Kylie Davis, Jada Orona, and Savannah Brown on that relay squad. Meanwhile, Kylie Nunes delivered a powerhouse performance of her own, winning the heptathlon with 4,588 points to become the State Field Athlete of the Meet and an All-American. She also earned All-American honors with a 3rd-place finish in the 100 meters (11.91), 3rd in the 100 hurdles (14.37), and 4th in the javelin (129' 2").
The Pirates' scoring depth proved just as crucial. Kylie Davis contributed big points with a 5th place finish in the long jump (17'11") and 6th place in the 100m hurldes (14.93). Julia Pedretti, despite not cracking the top four, made important contributions with a 5th place finish in the discus (140' 6"), 8th in the shot put, and 3rd in the heptathlon, where she joined Nunes as an All-American. Claire Pierce and Jade Thommes added to the total with a 6th and 7th-place showing in the pole vault, and the 4x400 relay team—featuring Ava Torres, Roy-Williams, Orona, and Nunes—grabbed 5th place in 3:58.02 to close out the scoring.
"I can't say enough about this group of young ladies and our coaching staff, said Coach Beeman. "A bunch of small town, 209 ladies putting their names on the map. An absolutely incredible experience. The entire team contributing throughout the entire postseason put us in the place to go for the title. The support from parents, family, friends, our athletic trainers, it takes a village. Truly remarkable group of young ladies. They are State Champions!!"
With a wave of All-American talent returning and a historic first title in hand, the Pirates have firmly established themselves as a rising powerhouse in California community college track and field.
