Ranked and Ready! MJC Volleyball Hits #18 in the State

The Modesto Junior College volleyball team has kicked off the 2025 season with a blazing 8-1 record, marking the best preseason start in program history. Currently ranked No. 18 in the State and No. 9 in NorCal, the team's success is driven by a dynamic blend of seasoned sophomores and impactful freshmen, creating a roster that Coach Brenda Moser describes as "incredibly deep, pushing us to compete at our best every day in the gym."
 
Sophomores Leading the Charge
The sophomore core has been instrumental in the Pirate's early dominance, bringing veteran experience and relentless energy to the court.
  • Alicia Souza (Outside Hitter, Hilmar HS) has picked up right where she left off in 2024, leading the offense with an impressive 98 kills and averaging 3.9 points per set. Her explosive presence on the outside has been a cornerstone of the team's attack.
  • Maya Gonzalez (Middle Blocker, Beyer HS) is making waves in the middle, boasting a .331 hitting percentage that showcases her efficiency and power at the net.
  • Emerson Garcia (Setter, Merced HS), a returner from the 2023 season, is orchestrating the offense with precision, averaging 5.83 assists per set. Garcia also ranks 11th in the state for service aces with 22, proving her versatility as a playmaker.
  • Courtney Washburn (Middle Blocker, Transfer) has emerged as a defensive force, leading the team with 24 total blocks and anchoring the front line.
Freshmen Making Their Mark
The freshman class is already turning heads, contributing significantly to MJC's early success and proving they can compete at a high level.
  • Finley Rosa (Outside Hitter, Hilmar HS) is second on the team with 60 kills, showcasing her offensive prowess and establishing herself as a key contributor in her debut season.
  • Teygan Horstmeier (Libero, Hilmar HS) is making a strong case for freshman stardom, ranking in the state's top 20 in two categories: 15th in total digs with 121 and 19th in service aces with 20. Her defensive tenacity and serving accuracy have added a spark to the backcourt.
A Bright Future Ahead
With a balanced roster combining experienced sophomores and talented newcomers, the Pirate's volleyball program is firing on all cylinders. The team's depth and competitive spirit have set the stage for what could be a historic season. As Coach Moser's squad awaits tonight's updated rankings, their 8-1 start signals that they are a force to be reckoned with in the 3C2A volleyball scene.
